De Warande: an indoor swimming pool with an ‘outdoor‘ feeling

« Back

Half of the glass roof can be opened on warmer days

Recreation resort De Warande in Oosterhout, via contractor Vaessen Bouw, asked Brakel Atmos, to engineer and construct the glass roof for its new indoor swimming pool. The basic principle was that at least 50% of the roof had to open in order to provide the ‘outdoor feeling‘ during the summer.

In consultation with the contractor, a number of scenarios were elaborated; a decision was then made to make half of the roof out of Brakel® Ventria extending windows.

Glass roofs to provide daylight

The swimming pool roof incorporates 5 glass roof panels in the form of a pent-roof. These glass roof panels, type Brakel® BA-4 HR, are 17 m long and 6.5 m wide and are equipped with reflective, insulating glazing.

Ventilation windows
These pent-roofs, with a pitch of 50, have 40 Ventria ventilation windows integrated within them. The extending windows have an opening angle of 45°.

Chlorine resistant

It goes without saying that the entire installation is suitable for use in a swimming pool environment with the corresponding presence of chlorine. The materials for the kit, pipes and cylinders (with specially selected piston rods and seals) were specifically chosen for this project.

Draught-free ventilation

The fact that the contracting party wanted a swimming pool with even ventilation but no draughts, means that the extending windows are controlled via an ANV operating system. The windows are opened or closed depending on the indoor or outdoor temperature, wind and precipitation.

Maintenance and TCO

The operating system has its own IP address so that it can be maintained remotely by the maintenance department.
De Warande is the second sports project in the Netherlands which has been completed on the basis of Total Cost of Ownership. This means that the contractor not only takes care of the design and installation of the system but also its long-term maintenance and energy management. For Brakel Atmos, this means a maintenance contract for 20 years.
