Effective heat extraction very important for packaging specialist Cups4you

« Back

The best workshop is one with natural ventilation

Cups4you in the Netherlands manufactures injection moulded packaging mainly for companies in the food industry, such as Johma, Campina and Haribo. The manufacturing process involves the injection of synthetic material. All machines heat up to temperatures between 200 and 240 degrees, making the manufacturing area very hot. And this heat needs to be properly extracted. Ron Vogels, Technical Manager at Cups4you, says that the hall having natural ventilation has the most pleasant working climate.

Cups4you, formerly Vadeal Plastics, has been operating since 1969 and, besides synthetic packaging, also produces bottle caps for both glass and PET bottles. These are manufactured 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The company engineers its own robots and has 72 employees.

Extremely hot

"The manufacturing process makes it extremely hot in the hall, which is a nuisance. Indoors it is at least 5 degrees warmer than outside, even in the summer months. So it is important to extract the heat properly to the outside air", says Vogels.

Natural ventilation works better than mechanical

"We have three halls on site. One hall is mechanically ventilated. In practice this means that outside air is blown in, which is then discharged via the roof. However, this does not provide a uniform temperature gradient; somehow the heat is not extracted. Contrary to expectations perhaps, but the hall with natural ventilation has the best climate. There the hatches, at the top of the hall, are opened opposite each other when it is hot. This automatically draws the heat out of the hall. The natural ventilation is controlled by the wind direction, but to be honest I sometimes open the flaps manually to get it a little cooler. That works perfectly."

Sustainability

"Natural ventilation is an energy-efficient system, and that is of course a nice bonus. However, our machines are the big energy guzzlers. A lot more could be saved in this respect, so we are focusing on that most of all. To limit the energy consumption of the machines, we cool using outside air, we use a closed cooling system and any heat released is blown into areas that are already cool, such as the warehouse."

Maintenance

"Of course, just like our machines, our ventilation systems also require periodic maintenance. So we have a service contract with Brakel Atmos. That works well: we are contacted in good time and maintenance is carried out properly."
